Choosing the Classics~ Online
Classic books have a way of sometimes staying on the shelf. The books you should read, yet you find yourself putting them at the bottom of the to be read pile.
In this book club, we will choose one author’s work to discuss, allowing you to decide whether you read Rebecca instead of Jamaica Inn or Pride & Prejudice instead of Emma.
Newly Published Book Club
Newly Published Book Club chooses a new publication to read each month and discuss.
Non-Fiction is filled with hidden treasures that can leave you with a sense of fulfilment despite not having stepped outside. So for our first book, we will be reading Hark written by Alice Vincent.
In this book club, one book is chosen two months prior to discuss. You do not have to buy a copy of the book from us, especially helpful if you already own a copy or a friend can loan one to you. Your ticket grants you a secured place on the evening and a place in our group WhatsApp (should you wish to join), where you can find out the latest information for bookclub. We ask that you finish the book, but please do not worry if you don’t finish in time for book club; still join us, as you may be persuaded to read more. We will discuss online how we found the book we have read, did it live up to the hype, did it delight, or did it need to be put back on the shelf for the foreseeable. This is a safe space so if you do not enjoy the book, do not worry, it can make for a great discussion.
For 12th June at 7:30pm, we will be reading Hark written by Alice Vincent.
“We're told women are good at listening, but we rarely examine what they're listening to, what their worlds sound like, or how it feels to be expected to listen in a world of noise made by men. Like so many of us, Alice Vincent had become overwhelmed by the sensory overload punctuating our every moment. And then, a baby's heartbeat arrived. A rapid, pulsing whoosh of white noise. An undeniable rhythm. Once again, Alice's life became cacophonous - both with a new child, but also with the societal pressures that motherhood holds. What followed was a personal quest to rediscover sound as something alive and vital and restorative. Beyond music, Alice's journey takes her into new corners of listening: from the phantom crying heard by mothers across the world to the nightingale's song and the crackle of the Aurora Borealis. As our attention spans shrink and our sense of disconnection grows, Alice wants to find out if sound - seeking it, trying to hold on to it, making space for it in her life - can reconnect her not only to lost parts of herself but to a life more consciously lived. Hark is a book for women who feel unheard and a means of listening more deeply in a world that has grown too loud."
